Artists from across northern Ontario, in both the music and
film industries, were recognized for their achievements on
Saturday evening.
Music and Film in Motion (MFM) announced the winners of the
2009 Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards (NOMFA) at what has
become one of the north's most anticipated annual events since
its launch in 2003, according to a press release.
This year was the second year for the MFM conference, which ran
April 23-25. It included showcasing, networking and mentorship
opportunities for participants. Phase two of the NOMFA's
expansion - The Perspectives Program - was introduced at the
conference this year, with the goal of further developing
francophone and aboriginal music and film/TV industry capacity
in the north.
To close out the weekend, an awards ceremony was held in the
Great Hall at Laurentian University, featuring performances
from this year's nominated artists, including Sudbury's C696,
film clips and a gala reception.
"Tonight's performances truly highlighted the depth of artistic
talent that can be found here in northern Ontario," said Dennis
Landry, executive director of MFM. "Through this program, we
hope we can continue to help cultivate the growth of a vibrant
and sustainable music and film industry for artists in the
north."
The Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards were created as a
means of recognizing and celebrating the accomplishments of
northern Ontario artists in the music and film industries.
MFM is a non-profit organization whose mandate is to foster and
promote the development of the music and film industries in
northern Ontario.
