Sudbury Studio Singers will host a special variety concert called “On the moon!” June 15 celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1969 moon landing.

The chamber choir will anchor the event with a new set of four pieces composed by their conductor, Robert Hall.

With titles such as “The Man in the Moon,” “Space Force” and “One Small Step for Woman,” the cycle takes a light-hearted look at the moon landing.

The work will receive its official premiere in Saskatchewan in July, closer to the actual anniversary of July 20, but the Sudbury audience will receive a sneak preview of the work for choir and piano.

Kevin Closs will present moon-related selections for a more popular segment of the program.

Also performing in the concert will be Guelph violist Henry Janzen, who along with Hall on piano will present a set of moonlight-related works.

Rounding out the program will be a showing of Georges Méliès 1902 silent movie “Le voyage dans la lune” which is incredible for its foreshadowing of many developments that were many years in the future.

It will be presented with live music accompaniment.

The 20 voices of Sudbury Studio Singers, under Hall's direction, are completing their second season and in that short time have achieved a reputation for their lyrical and dynamic singing. They will also perform the Whitaker setting of Margaret Wise Brown’s popular book “Goodnight Moon.”

Proceeds from the concert will go to the ALS Society of Canada.

The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. June 15 at St. Andrew’s Place, 111 Larch St.

Advance tickets are available at Grove’s-YIG, and Jett Landry Music. General Admission is $20 and Students and Seniors $15.
