Participants in the 2023 Seedy Sudbury are seen here. This year's event is set to take place at Science North March 3.

Organizers are putting the finishing touches on plans for what they say will be the best Seedy Sunday in Sudbury ever, with the full schedule of activities now available online.

For the second year running, Science North is providing use of the Vale Cavern for this volunteer run event on March 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This year the group will also use the Ramsey Room for screenings of the film “The Seeds of Vandana Shiva” and for “Seedy Story Time.”

“The main attraction is the seed swap, so bring seeds you’ve saved,” says Rachelle Rocha, one of the event organizers. “Even if you don’t have any to swap, come anyway!”

Rocha says that her main reason for being involved is to spread the word that Sudbury is a good zone for growing food.

“We’re gathering to create excitement and confidence around seed saving and swapping,” she said. “It’s a great place to make new connections, learn new skills, and to buy some interesting seeds adapted to our climate.”

There will be lots of opportunities for newbies to learn more about seed swapping, including several “Seed Saving 101” sessions throughout the day with Peggy Baillie from Three Forks Seeds on Manitoulin.

Other speakers will give short talks on topics including wildflower and culinary seed saving, growing and grafting fruit trees, medicinal plants, cooking with herbs, and using milkweed.

Long-time fruit grower Ron Lewis will be on hand all day to “Ask an Expert about Fruit Trees” and a wide variety of vendors will be selling seeds produced in northern Ontario and related products.

A number of non-profits will be on hand to provide information and help with activities.

Bring the kids too, as there will be activities for them, including looking at seeds under the microscope, tasting seeds and making seed packets.

If you can’t make it to the event in person, keep an eye on Seedy Sudbury’s Facebook page during the day, because Ferland Creatives will be streaming parts of the event on Facebook live.

Although the event is free, organizers are asking people to register in advance to help things run more smoothly at the event.
