One of the most talked about and sought after items at the
Finlandia Village Mayfair is the Finnish home-baking.
Liz Bivens, Finlandia Village accounting clerk and event
volunteer says, "People come in swarms for our Finnish pulla
(sweet coffee bread), our piirakkas (which are a traditional
Finnish pastry with rice filling), our crepe-like Finnish
pancakes cooked on the spot, and our mojakka (a traditional
Finnish meat and potato soup)."
As well, the seniors who live at Finlandia Village keep
themselves busy knitting, weaving Finnish rag rugs, as well as
creating other delightful arts and crafts, which will also be
for sale.
Mayfair also promises lots of fun for the younger set who can
participate in games, face-painting and a talent show. Another
amazing thing to see is a local spinner who will have her
spinning wheel beside the petting zoo llamas. She will spin
their fur into yarn. And don't forget the gigantic yard
sale.
The Mayfair proceeds will go towards supporting Finnish
Exchange Students and Majatalo.
Majatalo means "Inn" in Finnish and this building was designed
to bring a taste of Finnish design and culture to Sudbury. It
opened in January 2008 with the purpose of offering short-term
housing to seniors until their permanent home in Finlandia
Village becomes available.
As well, those visiting relatives, exchange students,
Finnish War Veterans and visiting Finnish dignitaries all
find comfortable accommodation at Majatalo.
The staff and residents at Finlandia Village invite everyone to
come and enjoy a great family day with them on Saturday, May
10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Finlandia Village is located at 233
Fourth Avenue, in Sudbury. For more information phone
