Rainbow Routes Association celebrated its 10th birthday with a cake walk in the Copper Cliff Park. Those in attendance were treated to a barbecue, sponsored by City Councillor Jacques Barbeau. Profits were shared with the Copper Cliff Community Action Network, a Rainbow Routes' partner organization.

Following a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday," featuring a local bag piper, over 100 people - young and old alike - participated in foot painting and a treasure hunt that incorporated physical activity. Others chose to go on the first guided History Hike through Copper Cliff.

On behalf of the mayor and council, Councillor Barbeau congratulated Rainbow Routes on their outstanding accomplishments over the last 10 years. Barbeau said, "The municipality has seen and understood the need for the development and promotion of non-motorized routes throughout Greater Sudbury as a means to creating a healthy community, and it will continue to work with this group to reach its goal of linking the city with trails."

Rainbow Routes' board member Melissa Gainer spoke candidly about her involvement with Rainbow Routes Association in the early years. "I was a FedNor Intern and being a relative 'greenhorn,' I figured the work should all be completed within one year. I am much wiser now."

Rainbow Routes Association said they are grateful for the ongoing support of the City of Greater Sudbury, federal and provincial agencies and the private sector, especially Vale Inco and Xstrata Nickel. They also wish to express their sincere thanks to the multitude of volunteers, past and present, who have contributed to our success.

"They are the backbone of our organization," the Rainbow Routes Association wrote in a press release.
