On Saturday Dec. 6, Sudbury will deck itself out in festive gear to take part in the annual Salvation Army Santa Shuffle.

Participants in Sudbury will enjoy one of the last races of the season with a frosty five kilometre family fun run as well as a one kilometre elf walk around Loach's Road in the South End.

Participants collect pledges for this event, the proceeds of which help women, children and men in crisis, feed and provide shelter for the homeless and help make Christmas a possibility for those in need.

In addition to raising much-needed funds for Salvation Army initiatives, participants who collect pledges are awarded prizes that increase in value with how much they've raised.

With a $50 pledge, runners receive a commemorative Santa Shuffle t-shirt.

On this same day, in 35 cities from Victoria to St. John's, shufflers will be out in support of The Salvation Army. Close to 10,000 participants from coast-to-coast raised nearly $335,000 in 2007. Sudbury raised $6,500 with 74 participants.

Providing a hand up rather than a handout is the core mission of the Salvation Army, helping thousands of people get their lives to a better place.

The Salvation Army began its work in Canada in 1882, and quickly became the vital part of the spiritual and social service life of the country that it now is.

Those wanting to participate can get entry and pledge forms at the Running Room, 1984 Regent Street in the Cedar Pointe Plaza, online at this website , or by phoning Tiffany Landry at The Salvation Army Women & Family Shelter at 673-1175, ext. 227.

Early bird fees are $20/person, $50/family, $150/team.
