The Sudbury Charities Foundation’s annual Festival of Lights is set to launch Sunday, Nov. 19 at Science North.

The lights will be turned on for the first time this season around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The Sudbury Charities Foundation is also hosting a special screening of the holiday short film “The Light Before Christmas” at 4:15 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. in the Science North IMAX Theatre that evening. Tickets can be purchased for $10 at Tony V’s Pizza while supplies last.

“Thanks to the volunteers from Greater Sudbury Hydro, the Cambrian Power-Line Technician Program and the Francophone Boy Scouts, the Festival of Lights is ready to come to life once again,” said Dustin Bradley, Sudbury Charities Project Chair.

“Last year we had an incredible launch event with over 300 attendees. This year, we expect around 400 community visitors to enjoy the activities and watch Santa on the fire truck as he ‘Flips the Switch’ for the Festival of Lights. It will be a magical evening, not only for those who attend but for those who are able to watch from Health Sciences North across the street.”

With the help of the volunteers from Ten Rainbows and the Sudbury Manitoulin Children’s Foundation, the Festival of Lights will run until Jan. 6.

Admission to tour the Festival of Lights on the grounds of Science North is free of charge, however a donation to the Sudbury Charities Foundation is appreciated.

"Science North is proud of our long-standing partnership with the Sudbury Charities Foundation and the Festival of Lights celebration that now spans over 26 years," said Guy Labine, Science North CEO.

"Many people may not realize that Science North is a not-for-profit organization as well as a registered charity, so we understand the commitment and passion it takes to bring something as wonderful and magical as the Festival of Lights to life year after year.

“We continue to be inspired by the dedication and devotion of the organizers, volunteers and other community partners who work tirelessly all year long to light up the season for thousands of residents and visitors through the Festival of Lights."
