Songs of Summer brings variety of headliners

Pop star, classic rocker, and metal goddess all on the bill for Songs of Summer

Theatre Cambrian hosts its third annual Songs of Summer Music Festival August 19 - 21.

The festival will feature more than 20 local bands, a variety of food and craft vendors, and exciting activities for the whole family.

Headlining the festival this year are well known artists such as the Canadian metal goddess Lee Aaron, pop sensation Shawn Desman, and Canadian rock icon Alan Frew from Glass Tiger.

Lee Aaron will kick off the festival Friday night, bringing her power and fearless style to the Theatre Cambrian stage.

In the mid-eighties to the early nineties Lee Aaron released six albums, including her internationally celebrated “Metal Queen”.

She has won three Toronto Music Awards for Best Female Vocalist, 10 Juno nominations, and has toured worldwide. Between 1982 and 1992, Aaron toured extensively over Europe in over twenty tours with appearances in Japan and the United States.

In 2000 she released the album “Slick Chick” showcasing it at The Top of the Senator in Toronto and numerous jazz festivals across Canada and Europe. “Fire and Gasoline” will be Lee Aaron’s first rock album released in twenty years.

Taking the stage Saturday night is pop sensation Shawn Desman. From his breakthrough album in 2002 to his chart topping singles "Victoria" and "Obsession" in 2015, Desman has produced hits and garnered various awards including a Juno Award and MMVA for Video of the Year.

With gold and platinum singles such as “Shook”, “Night like this”, "Shiver" and “Electric”, this Canadian popstar will be electrifying Sudbury audiences during the Songs of Summer Music Festival.

Alan Frew, Canadian icon and lead singer from Glass Tiger, comes to Theatre Cambrian Sunday night in support of his latest album 80290 Rewind (2015).

Frew, a five-time Juno Award winner and Grammy nominee, will take the audience on a musical journey down memory lane with interpretations of some of the best-loved songs from 1980-1990, including Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time,” hits by Glass Tiger, and more.

Although still performing with Glass Tiger, Frew has released three solo albums and in addition to being a singer songwriter, Frew has taken on the roles of actor and public speaker. In 2013 he was a recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Award in recognition of his commitment to charitable work for poverty-stricken children and dedication to the Canadian Arts.

With Glass Tiger, Frew produced several hit singles in Canada and placed two songs on Billboard magazine's top 10.

“We are extremely excited that we are coming close to our third annual Songs of Summer Music Festival,” said Mark Mannisto, Theatre Cambrian’s Artistic Executive Director.

“I love the fact that we get to combine Northern Ontario talent as well as talent from industry giants from across the nation”.

Opening for the Songs of Summer headliner concerts are local bands who competed on July 23 at the Ultimate Song of Summer contest.

“During the day we are shedding light on local artists, and at night we will listen to award winning A-list headliners. This year we are happy to incorporate both”, said Mannisto.

Headliner tickets can be purchased in advance online, reserved over the telephone, or by visiting the office at 40 Eyre Street between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
