Close to 70 students from the Rainbow District School Board and the Catholic District School Board took part in  a mock trial at the Sudbury courthouse.

The case that went to mock trial involved a man charged with assaulting a peace officer. Local lawyers helped the Grade 12 students by mentoring and coaching them prior to and during the trial. Schools competing in this year’s event included Espanola High, Lasalle Secondary, Lockerby Composite, Lo-Ellen Park Secondary, Sudbury Secondary and St. Charles College.

Awards presented were the Hennessy Cup, Best Advocate Defence, Best Advocate Crown, Best Witness and the Civility Award for courtroom decorum.

Local winners go to the Northeastern Mock Trial Competition held in early March. Regional winners compete in the province-wide finals in the spring in Toronto.
