Many local residents get excited this time of year as they anticipate going to the Sudbury Regional Historica Heritage Fair.

The public is invited to attend the opening event on Thursday, May 1 at Laurentian University's Fraser Auditorium.

Student stage performances begin at 6 p.m. and are followed by a cultural concert at 6:45 p.m. The public can view student projects after the concert from 8-8:30 p.m. in the Great Hall or on Friday in the Great Hall from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Admission is free both days.

"The Historica Heritage Fair, a showcase of our community and country's rich heritage, gives the youth of today an opportunity to research, discover and creatively capture history and bring the past to life," said Lona Joly, chair of the organizing committee. "Once again this year, students will enthusiastically engage in telling the stories of their family and community."

More than 1,600 elementary and secondary school students from Sudbury, Espanola and Manitoulin will attend the two-day exhibition and cultural celebration, making the fair one of the largest in Canada.

Over the years, student presentations have been as varied as the number of participants, drawing on a variety of formats, including dramatic and musical presentations, videos, posters, maps, essays, and 3-D displays, often accompanied by props and costumes. The fair will also have workshops and live performances, including entertainment by Confederation Secondary School's Evolutionary Band.

Winning projects will be announced at an awards ceremony on May 8. Several projects will advance to the provincial fair, to be held in Ottawa from June 11 to 15. One student will attend the national fair from July 7 to 14 in Victoria, B.C.

The Sudbury Regional Historica Heritage Fair is a community event organized and sponsored by a number of local organizations, including the Rainbow District School Board, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board, Laurentian University, the City of Greater Sudbury and the Sudbury Multicultural Folk Arts Association.
