Families can learn about the importance of literacy and how to create a book to record family stories at R.L. Beattie Public School's Family Literacy Night on Thursday, May 1. The school is located at 102 Loach's Rd. in Sudbury.

The evening will feature award-winning guest author/illustrator Sean Cassidy, who will present a workshop - from 6:30 to 7 p.m. - on the importance of literacy, ways of improving literacy and different types of literacy. He'll also demonstrate the relationship between words and images in picture books.

From 7 to 7:30 p.m., participants can take advantage of the selection of books at the Panorama Book Fair. Families can purchase great books for their home libraries at great prices. Proceeds from the book fair will enable the school to enhance its collection of books in the library.
