(NC) - With the fast-growing trend towards open floor plans in homes today, the ability to decorate interiors to achieve unity and harmony is a necessary skill. Sue Rainville, Hunter Douglas director of marketing, offers the following tips on how to decorate to successfully accomplish this look:

-  When mixing home furnishings with different colours, use the colour wheel system to make sure that the colours will blend well and not become too overwhelming.

- Combine pieces in a room that are all different shapes and sizes. Allow the eye to wander around the room instead of becoming drawn up or down based on the average height of the furnishings.

-  Co-ordinate the window fashions - even on horizontal and vertical window openings.

-  Place nice, decorative books throughout the room including on the coffee table, on high shelves and even stacked in a way to create a low table to add both a scholarly and creative edge to every corner of the room.

-  Lay a rug in the middle of the room that is large enough to have a strong presence, yet also balances with the colours and style of the other furnishings to serve as the final touch of harmony.
