"This is a new direction in programming for the Science North IMAX® Theatre," said Dawn Larsen, Science North marketing manager, in a release.

"The Dark Knight is a blockbuster Hollywood film that includes scenes filmed with IMAX cameras. It was meant to be seen on a giant-screen like the one at Science North. The film has also won numerous awards including an Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, which was presented to Heath Ledger, posthumously, during the Academy Awards held in February. It's a great film, and I'm confident that this film will attract a new audience of IMAX theatre fans."

The Dark Knight reunites director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who reprises the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in his continuing war on crime.

The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience features six sequences filmed with IMAX® cameras (including the opening six minutes). This marks the first time ever that a major feature film has been even partially shot using IMAX cameras, marking a revolutionary integration of the two film formats.

Sequences shot in traditional 35mm were digitally re-mastered into The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® technology. The two formats have been seamlessly integrated and morph between full IMAX and IMAX DMR.

In other words, scenes shot in 35mm will appear in IMAX DMR (letterbox), while scenes shot with IMAX's cameras on 15/70mm film will expand vertically to fill the entire giant IMAX screen for an all-encompassing IMAX Experience.

The Science North IMAX® theatre will allow audiences to experience The Dark Knight on one of the world's largest screens - five-storeys high by seven-storeys wide -- surrounded by state-of-the-art digital surround sound.

The unique geometry of the IMAX theatre combined with crystal clear, larger than life images and amazing digital surround sound, creates an immersive environment that puts the audience right in the movie!

"In continuing the story of such a great icon I'm thrilled to be able to expand the scope of the film, not just in terms of its story, but in giving Batman and the Joker the largest possible canvas on which to face off. No existing technology compares with the IMAX format in terms of its ability to throw the audience into the action, and we're very proud and excited to use this technology in a way that no one has before," said director Christopher Nolan.

In The Dark Knight, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good, with the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent. The triumvirate proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as the Joker, who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces the Dark Knight ever closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante.

The film also stars Michael Caine as Alfred; the late Heath Ledger as arch-villain The Joker; Gary Oldman as Lieutenant Jim Gordon; Aaron Eckhart as District Attorney Harvey Dent; Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel Dawes; and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox.
