Not only are the Nickel City Sound great singers, it turns out they're also talented crocheters and dedicated to helping those in need.

Last August, the group's president, Jean McHarg, noticed a call-out from the Northern Cancer Foundation to have community members knit squares to make afghans for local cancer patients.

In September, Nickel City Sound decided to undertake a project that would see members crochet several afghans during the month of January.

“In partnership with Overtime Sports Bar & Grill, ladies gathered there each Sunday afternoon in January to spend time crocheting and singing together for the cause,” said a press release.

On Jan. 28, six afghans were presented to the Northern Cancer Foundation.

The ladies of Nickel City Sound have vowed to continue the project in the coming year and to include knitters and family and friends in producing several more afghans.

Donations of yarn (worsted weight) would be gratefully accepted by the group.
