This Saturday's Berrio on the SandBanks concert to be filmed for PowerBoat Television

Floating concert by local country artist takes place each July on Lake Wahnapitae

Something exciting is happening at the fourth edition of the Berrio on the SandBanks concert on Lake Wanapitei this Saturday.

The event — organized by local country musician Larry Berrio — will be filmed and featured on an upcoming episode of PowerBoat Television on the Global television network.

The producers are arriving in Sudbury this week to film Berrio enjoying the best parts of boating on Lake Wanapitei.

Then on Saturday they'll film the Berrio on the SandBanks concert, a boat-in event featuring Berrio and his band performing on a barge.

“It is very cool,” said Berrio. “It's going to be nice to put Sudbury on the map.”

The concert, which is free of charge, starts at 1 p.m., with local musician Johnny Williams opening for Berrio, and runs until about 4 p.m.

In the case of inclement weather, the concert will take place Sunday.

“We're anticipating anything between 200 and 300 boats this year,” said Berrio, adding he's going to give away a “Larry Berrio” branded guitar during the concert.

“It's going to be that big. It's just kind of cool where you're singing to an audience that are standing in the water or they're sitting on their boats … You can't get more Northern Ontario than that.”

He said the sand banks on Lake Wanapitei are a lovely area with beach sand extending 100 yards into the water.

The only unfortunate thing is it's hard to get to the concert if you don't own a boat or know someone who does.

Berrio doesn't suggest kayaking or canoeing into the event because the lake can become treacherous in inclement weather.

Berrio on the SandBanks fits with the musician's interests, as it's no secret he loves power sports.

He said he's the only Canadian country musician to make a music video that includes snowmobiling, and he also owns a SeaDoo to enjoy Greater Sudbury's precious summer months. “I love any type of power sports,” Berrio said.

For more information, Berrio suggests heading to his Facebook page.
