Emilie Pharand would surprise everyone who knows her if, when she grows up, she doesn't work in the horticultural field.
She has the makings of a farmer.
Emilie, who just turned eight, has been interested in gardening
and growing things since she was four, says Grandma Irène
Forget of Azilda.
Grandma shares her granddaughter's passion for gardening, and
is proud to tell you this summer Emilie grew peanuts in her
garden.
The peanuts were grown from seeds purchased at Azilda
Greenhouse.
Peanuts are believed to have originated in Brazil or Peru. They
are considered something that grows in the sunny southern
United States, not cool Northern Ontario.
A few weeks ago, Emilie harvested her plants; there were enough
peanuts for her family to have a taste.
They tasted "very good," says Forget.
The Ecole St. Mary student, is the daughter of Denis and Lucie
Pharand. She gets help in her garden from her sister,
Stephanie, who is seven.
Emilie grows pumpkins, potatoes, carrots, corn and cucumbers.
She tends to her vegetable garden during the spring and summer,
and now is sharing her harvest with her family this
Thanksgiving.
