Greater Sudbury's Scott Merrifield's latest house concert features Marianne Girard, a Toronto singer-songwriter, Feb. 27.
The venue has limited seating and those interested are asked to reserve a seat in advance.
Girard was nominated for Contemporary Singer of the Year in the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards.
Merrifield, a folk music fan, has been organizing house concerts for 18 years. He was former artistic director of the Northern Lights Festival Boreal, where he first booked Girard into the Bell Park folk music festival in the early 1980s.
“She has a real knack for song writing,” Merrifield said.
“She has a warm visual quality and a good rapport with her audiences. She will do well in the intimate setting of our upcoming house concert."
Merrield ran into Girard recently at a meeting of the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals in Ottawa where musicians were showcasing their talents. Merrifield is vice president of the organization.
“I had not seen her in 20 years. She is even better (as a musician) than before. She remembered me and her experience in Bell Park at the festival. She said she had some great memories from it.”
Merriefiled's house concerts begin in September and run to May, generally one per month. This fall and winter he has booked Tracy K, the Marc Atkinson Trio, Jory North and Eve Goldberg. Coming up are Yukon country folk singer songwriter Kim Deggs in late April and The Undersirables duo in mid May.
Venue locations vary with each artist but all start at 8 p.m, said Merriefield. Admission for the Girard concert is $17.
