The money raised by United Way goes to 56 non-profit organizations that help members of the community. Even if we are not directly benefitted today, we may require the services of funded agencies such as CNIB, the Canadian Hearing Society, Canadian Red Cross or St. John Ambulance in the future.

"If United Way was not there, many community agencies wouldn't be either," said United Way campaign chair Denis Hubert, also president of College Boreal.

United Way is celebrating is 25th anniversary in Greater Sudbury.

The goal is $2 million. Last year, the United Way raised $1,880,000.

"There are so many well known agencies we visited this summer who said they would have to shut down without United Way contributions-those agencies that help the disabled, seniors, poor, homeless and victims of violence," Hubert said.

"When you work with 56 organizations that we do, you see the need is out there, the gaps in the community's fabric that need to be plugged for the betterment of thousands of children, seniors, women and others."

The city's United Way efforts are near tops in Canada, said Michael Cullen, the campaign director. "Our local office showed the second largest growth per capita of any in Canada."

Eighty-five cents of every dollar raised goes to charity.

"Our administrative costs compare very favourably with other charitable organizations," said Cullen.
