For its first concert of the 2007-08 season, the Laurentian Concert Series will present a fundraiser event, Piano Marathon III, on Saturday, Oct. 13, from noon to 10 pm at the Huntington University College.

The proceeds of the 10-hour event are intended to help raise funds for the purchase of a new piano for the music department.

Many of Sudbury's finest musicians, as well as a rising generation of young performers, have participated in this event in the past.

Among participants are LU president, Judith Woodsworth and other administrators. Local teachers, college and university students, and graduates from Laurentian are also taking part.

Particularly noteworthy are the full-length recitals that will be presented by Damien Laframboise, Aimee Leonard, Susan Silverton, and Charlene Biggs.

Laframboise is a Laurentian graduate who is now studying for a master's degree in piano performance at the University of Western Ontario.

Leonard is also a Laurentian graduate who is now in Toronto pursuing her singer-songwriter career.

Silverton, an accomplished violinist, will perform several sonatas for violin and piano, accompanied by Yoko Hirota.
Biggs, who teaches at Cambrian College and Laurentian University, will perform Beethoven Op. 110 and Schubert Drei Klavierstucke.

To close the marathon, well-known Sudbury jazz pianist Tony Simpkins will be joined by saxophonist Allan Walsh.
General admission is $20, $12 for students, seniors, and Laurentian staff, and free for children 12 and under.

For further details, contact Yoko Hirota at the Laurentian music department at 675-1151, ext. 2522 or by email at [email protected] .
