Walden Winter Carnival

The 49th Annual Walden Winter Carnival, which runs Feb. 11-13, is going virtual. There will be more than 40 virtual, online and at-home activities for all ages, with many prizes to be

Some of the activities include opening ceremonies, live entertainment, virtual escape room, snow sculpture contest, scavenger hunt, Valentine’s cake decorating contest, cooking demos and interactive children’s and family entertainment. The virtual event is open to everyone, but in order to qualify to win prizes, you require a button. Nori Gallery
Now open
Downtown Sudbury has a new art gallery. Nori Gallery opened recently at 76 Cedar St. Nori Gallery currently features the works of owner Brian Nori along with T. Hammond. The premiere exhibition offers a range of works that include the infusion of classical mediums with Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality, NFT & Projection Mapping. You’re invited to book a guided tour of the gallery. Walk-ins welcomed on weekends.

La Slague presents virtual family dance workshop (francophone activity)
Feb. 21
“Tricoter une danse en famille” workshop with Foolish Operations. Takes place via Zoom at 10 a.m. Feb. 21. This online workshop for families with children aged 3 to 8 is led by two dance artists and a musician. It invites families to explore creative movement by using wool to inspire movements like spinning, rolling, bouncing/jumping, and more. Attendees will also watch the short film “Tricoter” (5 minutes) and the team will share an original poem by author Jennifer Wickham. L’Arche Sudbury’s Treasure Hunt Fundraiser

The chance to create a treasure hunt in your own home, with everything you need provided by L’Arche Sudbury. You can purchase treasure hunt kits for $40, containing instructions and the necessary materials to set up and complete an at home treasure hunt. The treasure itself is a movie night package to celebrate once your family has completed the treasure hunt with a few special treats from local businesses. You can purchase your kit by visiting the L’Arche Sudbury website, found here, and clicking on the treasure hunt image, but they are limited to 100 packages.
Coldest Night of the Year (virtual fundraiser)

Sudbury Performance Group presents comedian Eric Johnston

Takes place at Trevi Bar and Grill. Early show 7 p.m. and late show 9:30 p.m. Eric Johnston is a Canadian stand-up comedian, actor, and M.C. from Hamilton, Ont. A professionally trained entertainer, he was educated at both Humber College in Theatre Arts, and the prestigious Vancouver Film School. An agile, high-energy, and diverse performer, Johnston stars in the international children’s show, “Splatalot,” which is seen on major networks in over 170 countries around the world (including Netflix) by day, and performs nightly on some of the top comedy stages and Comedy Festivals in North America. BLM Sudbury conference (virtual)

In honour of Black History Month, Black Lives Matter Sudbury will once again host their intersectional caucus, this year called “Amplifying Voices on Turtle Island (AVTI).” This is the second caucus event for the group, the first held in 2021. This edition will once again be held virtually and begins at noon on both Feb. 26 and 27. The free online conference will once again centre and uplift the voices of Black, Indigenous and people of colour (BIPOC) and 2SLGBTQ+ activists, leaders, educators, and changemakers from across Turtle Island. STC presents Matthew Heiti’s Ever Falling Flight

Sudbury playwright Matthew Heiti will see his play Ever Falling Flight produced by Sudbury Theatre Centre March 3-13. Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario was also to produce the play in French as Aéroportée this winter, but this has been postponed (new dates TBD). Dashing through increasingly strange ports-of-call with her (un) trusty navigator Fred, our hero takes to the skies in this comic fantasy inspired by the final, mysterious flight of Amelia Earhart and her famous 1937 record-breaking round-the-world trip. La Slague presents La veillée des éveillés (Big Franco-Ontarian Comedy Night)

Franco-Ontarian comedy is a hot trend these days as many up-and-coming stand-up comics and improv artists are making their mark. La Slague will showcase several of these rising stars in an exciting festival-style event spread across various performance spaces within the Place des Arts building. Jonathan Dion and Evelyne Roy-Molgat, both from the Ottawa area, are first on the roster and many more will be joining them. Celebrate Women fundraiser

CFUW Sudbury has again partnered with the YWCA and the Women’s Legal, Education and Action Fund (LEAF) to raise much-needed funds to assist women and girls in the Sudbury area with the 26th annual Celebrate Women event, set for 10 a.m. March 5. This year’s event will be virtual. Author and lifestyle pioneer Debbie Travis will speak about her recent book, Joy: Lessons from a Tuscan Villa. Tickets cost $20 each. Celtic Illusion at the Sudbury Arena
