Jazzed Up Downtown series 

May 26

Jazz Sudbury has resumed its free concert series every Thursday evening from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Oscar’s Grill, located at 86 Durham Street in Downtown Sudbury. The series features musicians from the Sudbury jazz community. The Christopher Dardick Trio performs May 26. Visit www.jazzsudbury.com.

Ces beaux visage, a photography exhibit by Cédéric Michaud

May 27

Les Concerts La Nuit sur l’étang and la Place des Arts du Grand Sudbury have announced a new photography exhibit to be held May 27 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The launch of Ces beaux visages, a photography exhibit by Cédéric Michaud, features photos captured in the midst of a defining time for artistic expression and community building in the ‘Nouvel-Ontario’ movement of the 70s and 80s. Those who wish to attend should RSVP no later than May 26, and can do so at the Place des arts website, found here

Bryan Adams concert tickets (Sudbury Arena)

On sale starting May 27

As part of a cross-country tour, Bryan Adams will be making a stop in Sudbury on Oct. 17 at Sudbury Arena. Tickets will go on sale May 27 at 10 a.m. on the Greater Sudbury website. The platinum-selling and Grammy Award-winning musician, known for hits like ‘I Do It For You’, ‘Cuts like a Knife’, ‘Run To You’ and the anthem that is ‘Summer of ‘69’, Adams is touring in support of his 15th studio album, So Happy It Hurts, released in March 2022. Not only considered an iconic Canadian musician, Adams also has three Academy Award nominations and five Golden Globe nominations. You can purchase tickets for the one night love affair here

Earthdancers performance

May 27-28

With the ongoing environmental issues our earth is facing today, earthdancers — a dedicated volunteer student led group of dancers — continues to fight for a better tomorrow. By taking their passion for dance and using it for a good cause, earthdancers strive together to reach their goal to help re-green and restore our environment locally and globally by donating all of the proceeds from their annual performances. Plan to attend their upcoming performances and join these young dancers in the fight to support environmental causes, on May 27 (7:30 p.m.) and May 28 (1:30 and 7:30 p.m.) at Place des Arts. All of the proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to environmental beneficiaries.

Remembrance Walk

May 27

N’Swakamok Native Friendship Centre, in partnership with Laurentian University and Greater Sudbury Police Service, are putting on a Remembrance Walk May 27, in remembrance of the discovery of what are believed to be the remains of up to 215 children in unmarked graves at a former residential school site found in Kamloops, B.C. in 2021. Meet at 12:45 p.m. at 110 Elm St., walk to Ramsey Lake begins at 1 p.m., with an orange flower memorial at 2:15 p.m. 

Defeat Depression Walk/Run

May 28 

The 9th Annual Sudbury Defeat Depression walk/run takes place in Bell Park May 28. Gather at the Grace Hartman Amphitheatre. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m., and the walk/run starts at 10 a.m. Supports the Northern Initiative for Social Action (NISA). Register online here.

L’Arche Sudbury Rock the Boat fundraiser

May 28 

L’Arche Sudbury, a non-profit that works with people with intellectual disabilities, has announced a new way to Rock the Boat in honour of founding member Roma Griffin. The fundraising event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 28 in front of the Amici and Ezentials building located at 863 Barrydowne Rd. There will also be live music being performed by members of AndDeJam from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. More information is on their website, found here.

STC presents Mining Rocks 

May 28-29 

Sudbury Theatre Centre presents Mining Rocks on stage May 28 and 29, starring 16 local student actors from the Students on Stage program. Nicky, a middle grade student, must complete an assignment about mining. However, it’s not until Nicky travels down into a mine with a yellow canary named Hali, that life, and the assignment, become fascinating. This original STC musical production is suitable for young audiences and features student actors, colourful sets and original costumes. Join Sudbury Theatre Centre's Students on Stage, as they unlock a story close to the heart. Public performances are Saturday, May 28 at 7 p.m. and Sunday May 29 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults/seniors and $10 for students. Carrefour Francophone presents screening of Mia et le migou (French-language family film)

May 29

Carrefour francophone presents family French-language screenings of the film “Mia et le migou” at Sudbury Indie Cinema. One night Mia has a premonition. So after saying a few words of parting at her mother’s grave, she sets out on a journey across mountains and jungles to search for her father, who is trapped in a landslide at a remote construction site. The second screening of the film this month runs May 29 at 1 p.m. Purchase tickets online here.

Walk to Make Cystic Fibrosis History 

May 29 

For the first time in two years, Cystic Fibrosis Canada’s Walk to Make Cystic Fibrosis History will return to an in-person format, this year held on May 29 in Bell Park. Participants will have the option to register to attend in person on Walk Day, or complete their walk virtually from one of the 70 locations across Canada. The Sudbury in-person event will begin with registration at 10 a.m. at the Elizabeth Street Gazebo in Bell Park, with opening ceremonies beginning at 11 a.m. and closing ceremonies at 1 p.m. Cystic Fibrosis Canada’s standard infection prevention protocols will be in place in addition to local COVID protocols. GNO presents exhibit Pi, in progress

Runs until May 30

The Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario is proud to announce Pi, in progress, the very first exhibition in its new gallery space at Place des Arts du Grand Sudbury. Lise Beaudry, a Franco-Ontarian visual artist originally from Earlton, proposed an original sculptural installation made up of thousands of stacked archival photos. In the exhibition Pi, in progress, Beaudry shares the process behind the creation of Pi (2020-2022), a permanent installation that stands 3.14 meters tall, like a pillar at the heart of the Place des Arts’ foyer. Sudbury Arts Council photo contest 

June 1 submission deadline

Sudbury Arts Council (SAC) invites amateur and professional photographers to submit images for a 2023 desk calendar. The Arts Council has an opportunity to do something fun with Journal Printing by supplying images for the company's annual complimentary calendar. The theme is Naturally Sudbury. Submissions should focus on Sudbury's natural beauty. Thirteen colour images will be selected by members of the arts council board, one for each month and a cover shot. Sudbury Performance Group presents RENT: The 25th Anniversary

June 2-11

Set in the East Village of New York City, RENT is about falling in love, finding your voice, and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, RENT has become a pop-cultural phenomenon, with songs that rock, and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages. Lasalle Secondary School presents Macbeth: An Unworthy King

June 2-4

After a two-year hiatus, the Drama Department at Lasalle Secondary School looks forward to presenting Macbeth: An Unworthy King by A.P. McRae and E. Savati. Performances will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2022, Friday, June 3, 2022 and Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 7:30 pm at the Lasalle Secondary School Black Box Theatre. STC presents Menopause: The Musical

June 3-5 

Returning to STC after three years, come see what millions of women have been laughing, cheering and raving about! Set in a department store, four women with nothing in common but a black lace bra come to realize they have a lot more to share than ever imagined. The stellar Canadian all-star cast makes fun of their hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, wrinkles, not enough sex, too much sex and a whole lot more! It's a laugh out loud comedy staged to 25 classic hits of the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. Runs June 3-5. Ticket information available here.

Cambrian Campus Comeback Tour 

June 4 

Fresh on the heels of its Virtual Spring Open House, Cambrian College is back with a full-fledged, in-person event. The Cambrian Campus Comeback Tour will take place Saturday, June 4, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the college’s main campus in Sudbury. At the Cambrian Campus Comeback Tour, you will meet faculty, staff and students who will share with you details about Cambrian’s 90+ programs, student services, financial aid, and other information about the college journey. Guided tours will also be offered. There will also be free food and lots of prizes. More details available here.

Collège Notre-Dame Le Bistro concert 

June 9 

Collège Notre-Dame’s Le Bistro singing café presents its new repertoire to the public during a June 9 concert.The Bistro is made up of CND music students from grades 9 to 12. Event takes place at 6:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium located at 100 Lévis Street in Sudbury. Tickets are $5 each and snacks will be available for purchase during the intermission. There will also be a sale of works of art created by the school’s visual arts students. Proceeds from ticket sales will go towards CND's music program while proceeds from the sale of artwork will support the school’s Art Club in the upcoming school year. Tickets can be purchased at Collège Notre-Dame’s main office or at the door prior to show time.

Dallas Smith at Sudbury Community Arena

June 10 

Billed as a multi-platinum winning country star, Dallas Smith is coming to the Sudbury Arena on June 10 as part of his Some Things Never Change Tour. This tour also includes the James Barker Band and special guest Meghan Patrick, Shawn Austin, JoJo Mason, Kelly Prescott and Manny Blu. Showtime is 7 p.m. Purchase tickets online here.

TNO presents Par ici, le talent! 

June 9-11 

The traditional TNO Community Show is back with a project that showcases the talent of Sudbury Francophones of immigrant background. This project is realized in collaboration with the Centre de santé communautaire du Grand Sudbury (CSCGS), Communauté francophone accueillante and Place des Arts du Grand Sudbury, with the goal to create rich opportunities for Greater Sudbury's francophone cultural organizations and folks having immigrated to the region to meet, exchange, and create new ties with one another. Eight citizens will be selected to participate in three evenings of this Grand Theatrical Talent Competition presented on June 9, 10 and 11 at La Grande Salle of  La Place des arts. Rayside-Balfour Days

June 9-11

Enjoy kids’ activities, a parade, live music, a classic car show, a barbecue and more over three days at venues in Azilda and Chelmsford. Hotel California (Eagles tribute) and Green River (CCR tribute) are the musical headliners at the Super Sound Explosion event at the Edgar Leclair Centre Saturday night. La Slague presents CAGE with Dan Bédard

June 11 

CAGE is a cyberloop band. An algorithmic composer interacts with five musicians live on stage. The software, named M, improvises grooves and controls the band’s shared space according to predetermined probabilities. In turn, the musicians improvise with what they’re given, thus closing the loop. The band’s name is a nod to the experimental composer John Cage. Welcome to the crossroads of musicality and technology. Performance runs at 8 p.m. June 11 at Boîte noire, Place des Arts du Grand Sudbury. Tickets available online here.

STC PA Day camp 

June 13 

Exploration and fun are the key words for Sudbury Theatre Centre’s PA Day Theatre Camps for youth ages 8 – 12. The final PA Day camp of the school year runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, June 13. $60, or $55 for current STC Academy students. After-care until 5 p.m. is available upon request for an additional $10. STC presents Leisa Way’s Rock n’ Roll is Here to Stay

Sudbury Theatre Centre presents the smash hit concert Rock ‘n Roll is Here to Stay on stage June 15 to June 17, starring Leisa Way and The Wayward Wind Band as they celebrate 50 years of rock history. Copper Cliff native and internationally acclaimed Canadian songbird Leisa Way has created magic with her newest concert, Rock n’ Roll is Here to Stay. Way and her Wayward Wind Band keep the rock ‘n roll and classic rock flame burning in this high energy show that will thrill audiences with the electrifying sounds of the hottest rock stars in history.
