Night Owl jazz series

Oct. 26

The Night Owl, a restaurant and lounge at 158 Elgin St., hosts weekly live jazz music every Thursday. Guests from Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Winnipeg and New York playing instruments such as the upright bass, guitar, trumpet, trombone, saxophone and keyboard are joined by local talent at the weekly events. Enjoy the sounds of Brian O’Kane on Oct. 26. O’Kane is head of the Brass Department at Humber College in Toronto and a regular member of John MacLeod’s Rex Hotel Jazz Orchestra (Juno Award 2010), the Barry Elmes Quintet, and has performed and recorded with groups including the Rob McConnell Tentet, The Boss Brass, Hilario Duran’s Latin Jazz Big Band (Juno Award 2006), and the Bernie Senensky Quintet. He has also backed up a lengthy list of international artists including Paul Anka, Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Diana Krall, and has appeared on numerous radio/television jingles and theatre productions as well as at jazz festivals across Canada and abroad. Sulphur literary journal issue launch 

Oct. 26 

Sulphur, Laurentian University’s literary journal, launches its newest issue at 6 p.m. Oct. 26 at Books and Beans in downtown Sudbury. Featuring poetry and prose written by emerging and established writers in Northern Ontario, Sulphur is a completely student-run print, unique to the North. The free event, open to the public, will be a celebration of the latest issue, including readings by writers featured within. Issues of the print edition will be available for sale at the event.

Short film launch and health symposium

Oct. 26

Check out a short film launch and health symposium Thursday, Oct. 26 from 6-10 p.m. at the Travelodge Hotel (Ramsay Room). Speakers include Kate Reid, Rachelle Rocha, Karen Hourtovenko and Gaetanne Larocque. The moderator is David Pearson. Rocha, a dedicated local pharmacist and co-owner of Seasons Pharmacy and Culinaria, is excited to announce the premiere of her five-minute short film, “Rocks in My Pockets.” This thought-provoking film explores the healing journey of the Sudbury Landscape over the past five decades and draws parallels to our own potential for healing. Set against the iconic backdrop of the Big Nickel, “Rocks in My Pockets” tells the story of Myles, who carries the weight of rocks in his prospector’s vest, symbolizing the burdens we all bear in life. Through Myles’ journey, the film delivers an inspirational message of healing and transformation. This event is free and open to the public. Register through Event Brite.

Thrifty Thursdays at SWC

Oct. 26

The Sudbury Women’s Centre (SWC) holds a monthly fundraiser aimed at helping women, girls, trans and non-binary individuals navigate violent and challenging life situations. Calling it Thrifty Thursdays, the SWC invites the community to join the cause by thrifting at their "My Sister’s Closet" boutique. The fundraiser will be held the last Thursday of each month, with all proceeds going towards providing clients with basic needs items. The next event will be held on Oct. 26 from 6-8 p.m. at SWC, located at 174 Douglas St., Suite 201. Participants not only have a chance to support a crucial cause but also an opportunity to win a Starbucks prize pack valued at over $100. Sudbury Burlesque presents Monster’s Ball 7: Cursed in Carnival Land

Sudbury Burlesque is bringing a cursed carnival to town, hosting their seventh annual Monster’s Ball from Oct. 26-28 at The Grand. More than 20 local and travelling performers will perform, including the “Goliaths of glam” duo, IZOHNNY, flying in from Portland, Oregon. “Monster’s Ball 7: Cursed in Carnival Land will take everyone’s favourite parts of the circus experience and make it larger-than-life, with cheeky and sexy twists,” according to a media release. “Even the audience can join in the fun by coming dressed up as their favourite ‘carnival’ or ‘circus’ character - but any costume will do, with fantastic prizes for the best dressed in the room.” Ticket information can be found online at SudburyBurlesque.com.

Oddhawks Friday Night Make-Believes

Oct. 27

Enjoy hilarious live improv theatre at Sudbury Indie Cinema. Join the Oddhawks Performance Company on the fourth Friday of every month for some late-night make believe. The company takes your suggestions and mines for comedy gold … or comedy nickel. It combines both short-form and long-form improv. The next event takes place 9-10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27 at the Indie. GNO presents “Journeylysm - Jorge Cueto”

Journeylysm is an artistic venture in which Jorge Cueto explores downtown Sudbury through photography and interviews. By immersing himself in this urban landscape, Cueto aims to reveal a space that transcends physical boundaries, delving into the dimensions of time, experience, imagination and emotion. Through his lens, Cueto captures the sound and light dimensions of the people he encounters. Cueto invites the public to meet him at the gallery every Wednesday until Oct. 25 from 4 pm to 6 pm. Projections will take place on the gallery’s façade every Friday until Oct. 27 from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario is located within the Place des Arts building downtown. Early Morning Rain: The Legend of Gordon Lightfoot

Sudbury Performance Group brings the Way-To-Go Productions show “Early Morning Rain: The Legend of Gordon Lightfoot” to Sudbury Oct. 27-29. The show tells the story of Canada’s own Gordon Lightfoot, who passed away earlier this year. His songs are known world-wide, and he is one of the most talented and prolific songwriters the world has ever seen. This concert is guaranteed to be an evening to remember for audiences. Northern Ontario Railroad Museum Zombie Train 

Oct. 27-29

Check out the Northern Ontario Railroad Museum’s Zombie Train experience Oct. 27-29. The event includes a Zombie Walk, Zombie Town Movie Night, Zombie Train Escape Room, Family Scare Fair, pumpkin patch, best costume contest, fireworks and more. The events are based on R.L. Saturday Morning All-You-Can-Eat Cereal Party (Halloween edition)

Sudbury Indie Cinema is chilled and thrilled to announce the Halloween edition of the Saturday Morning All-You-Can-Eat Cereal Cartoon Party! Kids today may not realize the significance of the Saturday morning ritual, but once upon a time, we had to wait a whole week to get our cartoon fix, and when we got it, we tended to binge. Well – welcome to the Saturday Morning All-You-Can-Eat Cereal Cartoon Party – that special time when kids and kids-at-heart get to relive the exciting Saturday Morning ritual of non-stop retro cartoons, and binge on the multi-colored sugary cereals that used to be a part of every “balanced” breakfast! The cartoon lineup is always a mystery, but expect to see monsters, sci-fi, sleuths, superheroes and all kinds of 2D silliness, both faves and obscurities spanning the ’50s through the ’90s, all punctuated with vintage commercials, PSAs and station IDs for a three-hour trip down memory lane! Film crew training sessions 

Oct. 28-29, Nov. 4-5, Nov. 11-12

Training sessions to ensure there are more qualified individuals available to work in Northern Ontario’s growing film and television sector are returning this fall. Cultural Industries Ontario North (CION), with support from REEL CANADA, is reintroducing the facilitating the Northern Ontario Film Crew Training Sessions, a program providing free training to individuals residing in Northern Ontario who want to start a career in film and television production. The workshops in the Sudbury area run Oct. 28-29 and Nov. 4-5 and 11-12. Training occurs on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Apply online here.

Winter clothing giveaway 

Oct. 30 to Nov. 2

Clothing collected through the Greater Sudbury community Winter Clothing Drive this fall will be redistributed to members of the community who are in need from Monday, Oct. 30 to Thursday, Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Southridge Mall - 1933 Regent Street in Sudbury.

Halloween Haunt Scouting Fundraiser

Bring the family out to the Nightmare on Saint Mary Halloween Haunt. The event is a fundraiser for the 1st Valley BPSA Scouting organization. “It's a massive yard haunt with over 30 animatronics, live scarers, with a dozen different themes and it's fun for any age,” said an email from the organizers. The event runs at 4429 St. Mary Blvd. in Hanmer 6-8 p.m. Oct. 26, 7-10 p.m. Oct. 27-28, 6-9 p.m. Oct. 29, 6-8 p.m. Oct. 30 and 6-10 p.m. Oct. 31. The attraction is free, but donations are encouraged. 

Wordstock Sudbury Literary Festival

Wordstock Sudbury Literary Festival runs its 10th anniversary edition Nov. 2-4 at the Holiday Inn Sudbury. This milestone event promises to be a literary extravaganza featuring a remarkable lineup of authors, poets, playwrights, masterclasses, panel discussions and more. The 10th-anniversary edition of Wordstock Sudbury boasts an impressive lineup of authors, poets and playwrights from across Canada and here in Northern Ontario. The festival will feature readings, book signings, panel discussions, and masterclasses, providing a rare opportunity for literary enthusiasts to engage with their favorite authors and discover new voices. Sudbury Manitoulin Children’s Foundation gala 

Nov. 3

Enjoy a tasty meal and help ensure children get to summer camp at the Sudbury Manitoulin Children’s Foundation annual gala at the Caruso Club on Nov. 3. This year, the event celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Send-A-Kid-To-Camp program, while supporting that program at the same time. The Nov. 3 gala will be held in the lower hall of the Caruso Club, 383 Haig Street. Tickets are $100 each, or $800 for a table of eight.

Christmas Luncheon at Grace United

Nov. 4

Grace United Church, 1520 Bancroft Drive, hosts a Christmas luncheon at the church (parking on Barry Street). On the menu are assorted soups, sandwiches, apple crisp with ice cream and choice of beverages. There will be a door prize, a quilt draw, a bazaar and crafts, as well as a back sale. Cost is $15 for adults and $8 for children ages 6 to 12. Children under 5 have free entry.

Frosty Fair at St. Mark’s United Church

The Frosty Fair at St. Mark’s United Church (45 Walford Rd.) runs Saturday, Nov. 4 from 1-4 p.m. Enjoy a cafe (coffee, tea, juice and cookies), a bake table and a craft table. Admission is free, and the cafe is by donation.

Cambrian College fall open house

Nov. 4 

Cambrian College is putting the finishing touches on this year’s Fall Open House. Cambrian will be opening its doors to potential students, their families and other guests on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities during Fall Open House include campus tours, information booths about Cambrian’s programs and student services, free food, Cambrian merchandise, and prizes. Those who register before October 30 to attend Fall Open House have a chance to win a $500 Amazon gift card. Prizes at Fall Open House include a $10,000, a $1,000 scholarship, a firepit custom-built by Cambrian students, and a 75-inch television with surround sound. Laurentian University fall open house

Laurentian University invites all prospective students to its fall open house Nov. 4, “offering a comprehensive look at the university's academic offerings, campus life, and the beauty of its natural surroundings.” The event runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. At this open house, participants can experience university life with captivating sample lectures, including "The Neuroscience of Video Games," "Heuristics: Mental Shortcuts," "Social Science Research Adventures," and more, giving a glimpse of Laurentian's diverse academic programs. The Student Services Fair allows attendees to explore support services such as Campus Security, Career Services, Health and Wellness, and more, providing insights into campus life. Guided campus tours will showcase classrooms, residences, athletic facilities, and the awe-inspiring natural environment surrounding Laurentian. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, presented by STC/YES Theatre

The play is based on the novel by Mark Haddon, adapted to the stage by Simon Stephens. Christopher, 15 years old, stands beside Mrs Shears’ dead dog. It has been speared with a garden fork, it is seven minutes after midnight and Christopher is under suspicion. He records each fact in the book he is writing to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington. He has an extraordinary brain. He is exceptional at maths, while everyday life presents some barriers. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched and he distrusts strangers. When he falls under suspicion for killing his neighbour’s dog, it takes him on a journey that upturns his world. The show runs at Sudbury Theatre Centre Oct. 20 to Nov. 5. Sudbury Outdoor Adventure Reels (SOAR) film fest

The Sudbury Outdoor Adventure Reels (SOAR) film fest takes over the Sudbury Indie Cinema’s screen for three days Nov. 10-12, with many premieres and filmmaker Q&As. The festival brings the best in outdoor adventure and wilderness films to the big screen at The Indie each November. For a limited time, you can grab deeply discounted All-Access Early Bird Festival passes for just $40. Enjoy three days of the best from Banff Mountain Film Festival, Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival, Whistler, Hot Docs and more. Lights On home decorating contest 

Nov. 11 to Dec. 12

Take part in the Lights On home decorating contest, organized by Café Heritage as part of its annual Festival Noël festivities. Residents and businesses in Rayside-Balfour are encouraged to decorate for the holiday season for a chance to win prize money. Enter between Nov. 11 and Dec. 11. The winners will be announced at the Winter Wonderland Opening on Dec. 15. The first-place winner brings home $1,000, the runner-up $500 and the finalist $250. Luncheon of Hope

The Northern Cancer Foundation, organizers of the Luncheon of Hope, have announced Jeanne Beker as the keynote speaker at the annual event, held this year on November 14 at noon at the Caruso Club. Beker is an acclaimed Canadian journalist, media personality and fashion entrepreneur. A release from the foundation and Luncheon of Hope committee state that Beker’s life has been full of adventure, “but none like the one she faced after her 70th birthday when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.” Tickets are $75 each, or $600 for a table of eight. GNO presents Against the Grain - Rachelle Bergeron

“Against the Grain” is an exploration of human existence, captured through an intimate lens and rendered in the timeless medium of black and white photography, using Kodak TMY 120 film. Each photograph within this series tells a story of individuals who navigate life in a distinctive and unorthodox manner, embracing their own unique path, often in defiance of societal norms.
