Collège Notre-Dame Le Bistro end-of-year show 

May 23 

Le Bistro, Collège Notre-Dame’s (CND) singing café, will present its end-of-the year showcase to the public Thursday, May 23. The concert, to begin at 6:30 p.m., will take place in the school junior cafeteria located at 100 Lévis Street in Sudbury. The students are proud to be able to share their musical talent through this event. Tickets are $8 each and snacks will be available for purchase during the intermission. Le Bistro is made up of CND music students from grades 9 to 12. Tickets can be purchased at Collège Notre-Dame’s main office, located at 100 Lévis St., in Sudbury, or at the door prior to show time (unless the tickets are sold out). Rainbow Connections conference

May 24-25

SQUAD (Sudbury Queers United Around Diversity) is calling all 2SLGBTQI+ seniors, elders, older adults, and allies in Northeastern Ontario to their conference, Rainbow Connections, held May 25 in Sudbury, with a meet and greet on the evening of May 24. This free event is open to 2SLGBTQI+ seniors and elders seeking connection and support, as well as service providers eager to learn and network with the 2SLGBTQI+ community and allies “committed to fostering inclusivity and understanding,” reads a release from SQUAD. The majority of the conference will be held at the Parkside Centre (140 Durham Street) with other locations including a meet and greet at the Quality Inn on Friday May 24. Saturday, May 25 will begin with an opening ceremony, starting the day with land acknowledgement, opening prayer, and remarks from local dignitaries and community leaders. Nuit émergente

May 24-25 

La Slague’s 10th annual Nuit émergente runs May 24-25 at Place des Arts, featuring artists including Mehdi Cayenne, Bermuda and Prairie Comeau. Once a year, Sudbury gets to discover emerging recording artists in a unique environment. It’s like a music festival in a park, but in a building. Concerts take place in various spaces. Spectators wander freely, meeting music at every turn. Tickets are available online here.

Defeat Depression walk

May 25

Sudbury Defeat Depression is holding a couple of fundraising events this month in support of Northern Initiative for Social Action (NISA) and the Mood Disorders Society of Canada. A Boston Pizza dinner/trivia night took place on May 9. The annual Defeat Depression fundraising walk also takes place May 25 at the Grace Hartman Amphitheatre in Bell Park. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. and the walk/run starts at 10:30 a.m. Register online here.

Sudbury Canoe Club open house 

May 25 

An open house for the Sudbury Canoe Club takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 25 at the Northern Water Sports Centre (206 Ramsey Lake Rd.). You’re invited to join the club this season for canoeing, sea kayaking, windsurfing, dragon boating, youth sprint and stand-up paddle boarding. Visit www.sudburycanoeclubon.com.

Walk for Alzheimer’s 

May 25 

The Alzheimer Society Sudbury-Manitoulin North Bay & Districts is set to host its annual Walk for Alzheimer’s on May 25. The walk is being held at Delki Dozzi Park, 3 Mary Street, starting at 10 a.m. that day. To register for the walk or for more information, visit WalkforAlzheimers.ca.

SudburyRocks!!! Marathon

May 26 

SudburyRocks!!! Marathon returns for another year of spirited running and community support. Participants will tackle various distances, including Marathon (42.2km), Half Marathon (21.1km), 10km, 5km, and a 1km kids run. The marathon is in support of the Northern Cancer Foundation. The start line opens at 7:55 a.m. in downtown Sudbury on Minto Street. Learn more here.

La Brunante show 

May 26 

Sudburians are invited to attend a concert featuring young talent just emerging from three days of intense workshops to hone their craft.  La Brunante will be held at Collège Boréal in Greater Sudbury this coming Sunday May 26, at 7 p.m.Tickets cost $10 each, and can be purchased at www.lanuit.ca. All those who hold a ticket for la Nuit émergente will be granted entry.

Book launch 

May 29

The second edition of Come On Over! Northeastern Ontario A to Z is launching in Sudbury on May 29 by Latitude 46 Publishing. Former Laurentian University history professor, Dieter K. Buse, has updated the original version he originally published through Your Scrivener Press in 2011 along with co-author Graeme Mount. The event takes place 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Living with Lakes Centre. It will include a conversation between author Dieter K. Buse and CBC Sudbury's Markus Schwabe. Come on Over! Northeastern Ontario A to Z is a unique, single-volume historical and cultural compendium which will interest residents and visitors alike. Copies of the book will be available for purchase for $29.95 (plus tax) and signed by the author. Books are also available at your favourite online retailer, independent bookstore or direct from www.latitude46publishing.com.

Lasalle presents The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon

May 30 to June 1 

Lasalle Secondary School will present The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon written by Don Zolidis at 7 p.m. May 30, May 31 and June 1. Two narrators try to recreate all 209 of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales in a wild, fast paced extravaganza. To make it more difficult, they attempt to combine them into one gigantic fable using Rapunzel, Rumplestiltskin, Hansel and Gretel, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and other more obscure stories like Lean Lisa and The Devil’s Grandmother. The show, for ages 10 and above, lasts approximately one hour and 15 minutes with no intermission. It will be presented in the Lasalle Secondary School Black Box Theatre. Admission is $5 for students and $10 for adults. Souvenirs, snacks and baked goods made by the cast and crew will be on sale before the show. Bring some change and enjoy some treats as you support the program.

Comedy show 

June 1 

A Chelmsford kid is on his way back home, and he’s bringing a few friends with him. Clint Gibbons hits the stage at Little Montreal on June 1, 11 years after his first foray into stand-up comedy on that very stage. Gibbons is now a part of Triple Jack Comedy, and he’ll be bringing other comedic members, Dan Allaire and Diamond Lewis Hill. Triple Jack has successfully toured the province and is looking forward to this next northern run, with stops in Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, and Little Current. CKLU storytelling night fundraiser

June 1 

Everyone probably has at least one good story. Stories have been the very foundation of our entertainment for centuries. CKLU may not have a cozy fire or soft couch, but what it does have is a collection of brave story tellers ready to let the truth out. CKLU 96.7 Radio is hosting its story-telling event, live and in person at Indie Cinema 162 Mackenzie Street 7 p.m. Saturday, June 1. Sudbury.com’s own Jenny Lamothe is the storyteller behind “Pillsbury Dough Girls.” Tickets are $25 and available on eventbrite.ca, cklu.ca or in person at Jett Landry Music 1119 Lasalle Blvd. (cash only) Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Curtain time is 7 p.m. Indie Cinema offers an array of movie-house treats and beverages including wine and craft beer. SSO season closer 

June 1 

The Sudbury Symphony Orchestra is capping their season on June 1 with a show featuring special guests Duo46. The program will begin with an Overture from one of Mozart’s last Operas La clemenza di Tito. The balance of the first act will be filled out by Duo46, a violin and guitar ensemble made up of Sudbury Symphony Music Conservatory faculty members Beth Ilana Schneider-Gould on violin and Matt Gould on guitar. The program will end with Ludwig Van Beethoven's symphonic debut, the Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21. For more information on the upcoming performance, including tickets, click here. Gutsy Walk 

June 2 

More than 1,000 Sudburians are expected to take part in the annual Gutsy Walk on June 2. The yearly event raises funds and awareness for Crohn’s Disease or ulcerative colitis, a condition that affects an estimated 344,000 Canadians. In Sudbury, the walk will be held in Bell Park, starting at the William Gazebo on June 2 at 10 a.m. For information on how to sign up, click here. Participants typically walk five km, but any distance or activity done on the day qualifies.

Premium Car Show

June 2

Cruisin’ for Organ Donors and Sudbury CARes are hosting a Premium Car Show at the 1010 Lorne Street parking lot from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is being held in memory of Gerry Montpellier, Michael Vagnini and Terry Witrak, and will include live music, an ice cream truck, food vendors, kids zone and prizes. Monetary donations will be accepted upon entrance. Musicians Ashley Woodruff and Rob Murphy will perform from 11 - 11:45 a.m., and The Bluez Brotherz will perform from 3-4 p.m. Also performing during the day are Corey Libbey and Brad Rose, an Elvis impersonator. 

Grow Together Festival 

June 8

The Northern Ontario Railroad Museum & Heritage Centre’s inaugural grow together festival runs Saturday, June 8, kicking off the summer season with a celebration of all things gardening and wellness. The Grow Together Festival, running 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will feature a vibrant marketplace where local vendors and organizations can showcase their gardening and wellness initiatives. Attendees can expect engaging speakers, informative booths filled with expert advice, and exciting activities designed to inspire and educate.  Whether you're a seasoned gardener looking for new tips or a curious newcomer eager to explore the world of permaculture and healthy living, the Grow Together Festival offers something for everyone.
