CBC food commentator Anita Stewart has announced the annual World's Longest Barbecue celebrating the rich taste and eco-friendly aspect of eating locally.

"Eating local, fresh and healthy food has taken off in all parts of Canada over the last few years and this national day I consider a second Canada Day because of the importance of the flavours of Canada regionally to our palates, our families and our communities," she said last weekend on CBC Radio One's Fresh Air show.

This Saturday August 2, at 6 p.m. the foodie event, started by Stewart, is celebrated across Canada and here locally, said Allison Muckle, project co-ordinator for Eat Local Sudbury Co-operative.

The group operates out of Market Square on weekends and Wednesday afternoons from 4:30 p.m.

"Invite some friends over; fire up the grill and wherever you live, work or play and taste our incredible northern bounty-the true flavours of Canada," said Muckle.

What are the suggestions by Eat Local Sudbury?

-juicy smoked pork sausages or pre-seasoned beef burgers from Burt Farms, Gore Bay
-pasturized pork sausages (tomato basil or honey garlic) from Dalew Farms, Lavigne
-mild Italian sausage from terza Farms, Thornloe
-elk and red deer steaks from Greenzone Farms, Chelmsford
