In a world of e-mails and iPods, drama clubs give students the chance to wrap themselves in the skin of a character and perform in front of a live audience.

The experience builds confidence, self-esteem and public speaking skills, as well as commitment, responsibility and organizational ability, said Leanne Morin, media contact for Sudbury schools participating in the Sears Ontario Drama Festival. "The kids have a great time."

Audiences will see the work of over 100 students in acting, directing, lighting, sound and stage design.

Morin, who's from Sudbury and studied at the University of Alberta, is the first drama teacher hired by Lockerby Composite School. It's Lockerby's drama club which will put on the show after practising all year during lunch breaks, after school and on weekends.

"Most want to go on to become actors," Morin said of the festival players.

The one-act plays, some of which were written by students, run from 15 to 50 minutes.

Winners of the Sudbury district event, which showcases six schools, will advance to the regional festival. The winners will move onto the provincials.

Tickets will be sold at the door for the festival, which runs nightly March 31 to April 2 at 7 p.m. at Sudbury Secondary School at 85 MacKenzie St. They cost is $8 for adults and $5 for students or $20 for a three-day pass.

The schedule for the festival:
Monday - Sudbury Secondary, ES Hanmer, Confederation;
Tuesday - Sudbury Secondary, Lockerby, Lasalle;
Wednesday - Sudbury Secondary, ES MacDonald Cartier.

An awards ceremony will be held Wednesday night.
