Ed Bumbacco, manager of corporate logistics, purchasing and stores at Algoma Steel, will be in Sudbury next week to discuss Algoma?s corporate purchasing practices, describe the company?s array of byproducts, and shed light on the potential for developing new product lines with byproducts from the steel industry.

His presentation will be of keen interest to area suppliers who are seeking to expand the scope of their businesses and extend their markets beyond the borders of Greater Sudbury.

Bumbacco is the keynote speaker at the next NORCAT/Northern Ontario Business Opportunity Series (NNOS). This will be the third presentation in the series? current season.

Bumbacco will recount the history of Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, and talk about why the company is doing so well.

Algoma is North America?s lowest-cost producer of hot-rolled coil steel, and has the highest operating income per tonne, according to a recent article in Northern Ontario Business.

NORCAT and Northern Ontario Business partnered last fall to present a series of four morning seminars.

?This series offers a prime opportunity for local businesses to learn more about major industry players, wherever they may be located,? says Patricia Mills, publisher of Northern Ontario Business. ?Suppliers and manufacturers come together and network.?

Darryl Lake, executive director and CEO of NORCAT, agrees. ?Greater Sudbury is home to many suppliers whose products and services support a number of different industries. Niche markets can have broad reach.?

The series gives attendees the chance to discover marketplace potential. The seminars attract a wide variety of small- to medium-sized companies wanting to learn about the prospects of doing business throughout Northern Ontario, Canada and globally.

Guest speakers to date have included Tembec president Frank Dottori, who addressed the state of the forestry industry, and Tony George, mine manager of the Victor Diamond Mine Project, who described supplier opportunities at De Beers.

The seminar featuring Algoma Steel will be held in the Fontaine Bleue Restaurant at Cambrian College?s Barrydowne campus Wednesday, March 23.

Registration opens at 7 am, with Bumbacco?s presentation starting promptly at 7:30. A question-and-answer period will follow. Tickets are $48.15, and include a hot buffet breakfast. Seating is limited to 100, so pre-registration is recommended.
