Amazing: Northern Cancer Foundation raised $2.2M last year

The Northern Cancer Foundation raised $2.2 million in the 2014-2015 fiscal year, including more than $1 million from community donations, the organization announced at the Health Sciences North board of directors meeting Tuesday evening.

The Northern Cancer Foundation raised $2.2 million in the 2014-2015 fiscal year, including more than $1 million from community donations, the organization announced at the Health Sciences North board of directors meeting Tuesday evening.

In that year, the foundation allocated almost $1 million to cancer research and equipment grants, and set aside $250,000 for patient support and equipment.

The Northern Cancer Foundation spent an additional $100,000 on student bursaries and volunteer support.

Since it was formed in 1992, the Northern Cancer Foundation has supported research at Northeast Cancer Centre, and has initiated collaborations with Health Sciences North, Laurentian University and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.

Shayne Smith, the foundation's vice-chair, told the hospital board the Northern Cancer Foundation's goal is to become the cancer charity of choice in northeastern Ontario.
