The community of Azilda is rallying behind Sudbury resident John Lundrigan, who is battling cancer.

The 41-year-old has to travel to Ottawa to receive treatments and he has must spend days at a time doing outpatient treatment. On a GoFunMe page, Lundrigan wrote that in September, 2015, Lundrigan was diagnosed with Stage 4 large B cell diffused non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Off work for nearly a year, he appeared on the verge of remission, but back in July a biopsy confirmed cancer was still present. Unable to work, Lundrigan has reached out to the community for help through a $20,000 GoFundMe campaign, which has so far raised about $6,000.

"During the first round of my cancer fight, which took almost a year I didn’t ask help. I assumed the financial burden all to myself, which has me near the end of a rope," Lundrigan writes on the GoFundMe campaign website. "Now with a second round and fight ahead of me, I don’t have the resources to go it alone."

The community of Azilda has also come together for the Lundrigan family. Marylene Breton reached out to Sudbury.com with information about an upcoming fundraiser to help the family.

"John and his family are facing financial struggles as he will have to stay in a hotel for the duration of his three months of treatments," said an email from Breton, who is helping to organize the event.

The fundraiser will be held Oct. 22 at the Edgar Leclair Community Center in Azilda, and will include a dinner, dance and silent auction.

Tickets are $40 per person which includes meal and live entertainment for the evening.
