Public Health Sudbury & Districts has removed the swimming advisory for Maintenance Beach.

The most recent water samples taken at the beach by Public Health Sudbury & Districts are within acceptable bacteriological water quality standards for bathing beaches. As a result, the beach water quality is once again considered suitable for recreational use.

Public Health Sudbury & Districts takes routine water samples regularly during the summer from 33 local beaches. For information about beach water quality, visit www.phsd.ca.

Original story

Public Health Sudbury & Districts (PHSD) released a swimming advisory on Ramsey Lake after water samples came back with higher than acceptable levels of bacteria.

The water samples were taken from Maintenance Beach as a routine water quality test. As a result of the routine testing, PHSD found that the beach water quality is not suitable for recreational use at this time.

The swimming advisory is to inform the public of the certain risks that come with going into water with higher levels of bacteria present.

“When bacteria is present in high concentrations, it puts bathers at risk for infections. Illnesses can occur if swimmers swallow beach water; if water gets into their ears, eyes, or nose; or if it comes in contact with open wounds,” PHSD said in a media release.

PHSD management will continue to enhance monitoring and notify the public when the bacteria levels return back to normal. Visit the PHSD website to find out more about beach water quality.
