Boating accident victims loved the outdoors

The visitation for two men who were killed in a June 30 boating accident near Skead will be held today (July 4).

Friends and family of 33-year-old Matthew Humeniuk and 34-year-old Michael Kritz are invited to the visitation, which takes place from 3:30 to 9 p.m. at the Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home.

A funeral mass for the two men will take place at the St. Bernardine of Sienna Church in Skead July 5 at 10 a.m.

Humeniuk and Kritz were killed after the 23-foot-long boat they were travelling on struck an island at Red Rock Point on Lake Wahnapitae at around 12:45 a.m. June 30.

A 25-year-old woman who was travelling in the boat with them was taken to Health Sciences North, where she was listed in critical condition. As of July 4, she's still in hospital. A 28-year-old man was treated for non life-threatening injuries.

Members of Greater Sudbury Police's traffic management unit are conducting interviews as they investigate the incident. Transport Canada is providing assistance with the investigation. The vessel has been held for examination, but it is anticipated it will be released by the end of July 4.

Humeniuk is survived by his mother and father, Bob and Brenda Humeniuk of Skead, and his brother, Ryan.

His obituary said he worked for Xstrata Nickel, and enjoyed the outdoors, including boating, snowmachining and skiing.

“He loved living in Skead and spending time on Lake Wahnapitae,” Humeniuk's obituary said.

“He loved the crew he worked with at Xstrata. He loved hammers, nails, drills and anything that allowed him to build, especially his dream house. He loved his family, extended family and friends.”

Kritz is survived by his mother and father, Jim and Loretta Kritz of Skead, and siblings Blaine, Toni, Candace and Matthew.

His obituary said Humeniuk was his best friend.

“Mike loved the lake and spent many happy hours at the marina with his family, on his boat cruising and fishing, and at his island relaxing,” the obituary said.

“Mike was a talented craftsman and took great pride in his projects. His big heart, love of life and easy going nature endeared him to all. He will be sadly missed but never forgotten. Go easy, Mike.”

In lieu of flowers, both men's families are asking for donations to Health Sciences North's pediatric unit through the Health Sciences North Foundation.
