Réo Bruno Gauthier, owner of the City Surplus store, died at the age of 74, Dec. 30 after a brief illness.

GAUTHIER
Born in Bigwood, near Alban, Gauthier was a business owner for more than 60 years. He also had a passion for painting Sudbury historical sites and landscapes using watercolour and oils. His work hangs in many law and accounting firms throughout the city.

He married his wife, Marianne, in 1960. A few years later he took over the family business from his father, Harvey, who opened the downtown store in 1944. His son Bruno is the third generation in the family business.

Through the mid-1970s and 1980s, Gauthier opened a gallery in the same building where he sold work of well known artists.

?Whether he was selling a $2 pair of socks or a $200 sleeping bag, he had the same passion for the product,? explains Bruno, one of four children.

Remembered as a great father to all his children, Bruno said, ?Our upbringing was second to none. He made sure every child was encouraged in every aspect.?

He remembers his father as a private man enjoying his time at the cottage or driving him to hockey and baseball games.

Many family and friends attended the mass and funeral Jan. 3 at Ste. Anne-des-Pins Church.

Gauthier is survived by his wife, his children: Josette (friend Carlton) of Atlanta; Manon (spouse Steven Simonz); Bruno; and Caroline (spouse Jamie Spadafora) all of Sudbury; and his grandchildren Ramsey, Jeremie and Xavier.

A fouth grandchild, Niko, was born Jan. 2.
