“They don't have a limit to what they can drink.”
When the Rotary Club of Sudbury Sunrisers heard the Elgin Street Mission is in desperate need of coffee donations, they stepped in. The club is holding a drive to bring in donations of 1,000 cans of coffee.
Kicking off the effort was William and Christopher McCormick. They donated $500 and six cans of coffee to the campaign.
"We saved up a bit of money doing odd jobs here and there, and donate that money to where it's needed," Christopher said. "Whatever comes out of the odd jobs, we're happy to give back, because we're lucky enough to have a roof over our head and food in our stomach.
The young brothers have been volunteering at the mission for about four years. They donate sandwiches every week, and lend a helping hand any way they can.
"It's always nice to see how appreciative the people are, and we always get a thank you," said William.
“The coffee itself is by far the most popular beverage at the Elgin Street Mission, and literally, they go through hundreds of pounds of coffee each year,” Gerry Lougheed Jr., founding president of the Rotary Club of Sudbury Sunrisers, and co-chair of the coffee campaign.
The coffee drive is being held in advance of the club's Fishing for Food event June 18-20, where people can fill Legend Boats with non-perishable food for the Elgin Street Mission.
Zaldiner said the club's help is amazing. “We just thank them so much for doing it,” he said.
Donations of coffee or money — $10 buys one large can of coffee — can dropped off at the Lougheeds Flowers, located at 252 Regent St. Phone 705-673-9591.
