During Cambrian College’s 48th Convocation ceremonies, held June 2-3, three exceptional graduates were honoured for their academic excellence and contributions to the Cambrian community.
The President’s Gold and Silver Awards
The President’s Gold and Silver Awards are presented annually to two graduating students who have achieved academic excellence and made significant contributions to the college and community. The Gold Award is accompanied by a scholarship valued at $2,000 and the Silver Award by a scholarship valued at $1,500.
Gold Award Winner: William Merrylees
William Merrylees is a graduate of the Community and Justice Services program and is an inspiring leader, dedicated student, and tireless volunteer. Merrylees’ younger classmates call him “Big Brother” because he is a remarkable role model. The father of six earned a 4.0 average, and has done an exemplary job balancing the demands of his challenging academic program with volunteer and family commitments. His positive attitude and energy inspire those around him to be the best that they can be.
Silver Award Winner: Evan Horton
Evan Horton is a graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program who is a gifted leader with a strong sense of social responsibility. He served as President of the Cambrian Nursing Students’ Council, is an active volunteer, and organized numerous fundraising events and activities to support students. Horton’s outstanding leadership skills, energy, and enthusiasm have enhanced the College and the community.
Governor General’s Academic Medal: Rob Powell
The Governor General’s Academic Medal is awarded each year to the graduating student with the highest average in a diploma program.
Rob Powell is a graduate of the Electrical Engineering Technician program who earned a 96.92 percent average, which is an outstanding achievement. Powell enrolled at Cambrian as a mature student and, over the course of his studies, developed a fascination with electrical theory and practice. His discipline, curiousity and attention to detail have all contributed to his academic success. Powell is continuing his education at Cambrian this fall in the Electrical Engineering Technology program.
