It’s a record that keeps on going at Cambrian College.

This year marks the 17th straight year that every member of the graduating class of Cambrian’s paramedic program passed the provincial paramedic certification exam.

The exam is the final stage for those seeking a career as a first responder. Passing the certification exam allows graduates to officially work as paramedics in Ontario.

“I’m brimming with pride for this class of students,” says Derek McKinnon, professor and co-ordinator of Cambrian’s paramedic program. “For almost two decades, our graduates have achieved a 100-per-cent pass rate. It is a reflection of their hard work and dedication to this program and their careers, as well as the amazing staff and faculty we have here at Cambrian guiding them to this goal.”

One of the newest graduates of Cambrian’s paramedic program is 22-year-old Aurora Acorn of Haliburton. Upon completion of her studies this spring, Aurora began working for Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services and Manitoulin-Sudbury Paramedic Services.

“Deciding I wanted to be a paramedic just happened on a whim for me, but after looking into colleges, I knew there was no question about wanting to go to Cambrian based on their amazing success rate,” said Acorn. “Every day I went to class ready to learn and challenge myself and I loved every second. Now I get to translate that love into my job and put all the skills and knowledge I gained at Cambrian to the test and help people in some of their worst moments.”

Cambrian College offers both a primary care paramedic program and an advanced care paramedic – graduate certificate program.

“Cambrian is a place that has become renowned for excellence, and our paramedic program is a provincial leader,” said Paula Gouveia, vice-president Academic at Cambrian College. “Our graduates enter the workforce highly qualified and ready to go. To see 17 years in a row with a 100-per-cent pass rate is another example of why Cambrian is the go-to destination for post-secondary students in the north.”
