Enjoy some winter fun and family friendly activities at the Capreol Winter Carnival Feb. 28 to March 1.

A variety of activities will take place throughout three hubs in the community, including the Fire House Bar and Grill, Capreol Cross Country Ski Club and Downtown Capreol.

“The winter carnival was a longstanding tradition in the Town of Capreol dating back to the 1960s with many reincarnations since then,” said Justin Seguin, co-chair of the 2020 carnival.

“There is a real sense of the community in Capreol, which is my home. We were lacking a winter activity for a very long time, so we got together with representatives from local businesses and service clubs to bring the carnival back to life.”

The carnival kicks off at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28 with the weekly Fish Fry at the Royal Canadian Legion, followed by a ball hockey tournament, a comedy night featuring Gilson Lubin as well as a bon fire and ice bar at the Fire House Bar and Grill.

Families will enjoy a free movie night at the Trinity United Church starting at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, Feb. 29 there will be a pancake breakfast at Trinity United Church starting at 8:30 a.m. and a poker ski run and barbecue at the Capreol Cross Country Ski Club starting at 10 a.m.

Throughout the afternoon there will also be children’s activities and a vintage snowmobile show at the Heritage Centre, and a chili cook-off at the Legion. The ball hockey tournament continues at the Fire House and the evening will feature a concert by the Singing Soldiers.

The festival fun wraps up Sunday, March 1 with a seniors’ tea at 1 p.m. at Trinity United Church and a polar bear dunk and the ball hockey tournament finals starting 12pm at the Fire House.

A Porketta Lunch and the awards ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. at the Capreol Curling Club.

Festival buttons cost $5 and can be purchased in advance from Foodland in Capreol and Garson, and a number of other Capreol businesses including the M & R Grill, Home Hardware, Mazzuca Motors, Rocky’s, The Fire House Bar and Grill, Aquacade in Sudbury and King Sports Wear in Hanmer.

Throughout the carnival and in the weeks leading up to the big event, local Capreol families are invited to the get into the spirit by creating a snow sculpture in their front yard. Entries will be judged by the Citizens on Patrol program and prizes will be awarded by the Capreol Community Action Network.
