There’s nothing Jack Dewar liked more than playing golf with his children, grandchildren and friends.

His golf buddies from the regular men’s night Wednesday at the Idylwylde Golf and Country Club say being able to play with Dewar was a highlight of their week.

“Jack was just a great guy and his forte was bringing out a new joke every men’s night at the Idylwylde,” said golf partner George Lund.

“Jack had a tremendous sense of humour and he was a gentleman. All of the characters who got together all those years on men’s night all had their own special characteristics, but for Jack it was all about being a gentleman and class act.

The friends Dewar played men’s night with on a regular basis included Nick Sosterich, Vip Palladino, Cam Stewart, Ed Zanier, Bruce Haddad, Lund and Fred Castron.

Dewar, 73, died Monday in hospital in Sudbury with his wife and children at his side.

Dewar came to Sudbury from Nova Scotia in 1953 and quickly established himself as a solid business owner. He started his own automobile dealership. He and sons, Gerry and Doug, owned  Duhamel & Dewar on Barrydowne Rd. for many years. His sons still operate the successful dealership.

Dave McCready, another golf partner with many years of experience in the car dealership business, remembers Dewar was a very well-liked and popular guy.

“I would classify Jack as being a really good guy and great friend who was also an outstanding businessman,” he said.

Dewar is survived by his wife Joyce, his two sons, daughter Cathy, and five  grandchildren.

At Dewar’s request, there was no public visitation. He was buried in a private ceremony Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, the family would ask donations go to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
