The fourth annual charity golf tournament in support of the Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer at Forest Ridge Golf Course took place Saturday, raising thousands of dollars for a good cause.

“The day was beautiful and many balls were lost,” organizer Mike Bellerose said in an email. “We had 17 teams participate. The day was a great success.”

Local groups sponsored the event and helped to raise $4,250 in support of the NOFCC. Bellerose, who is on the social committee at CUPE Local 4075, said the local picked which charity to support very carefully.

“Our local chose NOFCC because they are an amazing organization,” he said. “We have built a strong relationship with NOFCC executive director Dayna Caruso.

“When someone is diagnosed with cancer, they normally worry about bills and such because the sad reality is that they don't stop,” Bellerose wrote. “However, in my eyes, when your child is diagnosed with cancer, the parents will go through as much debt to ensure that their child is OK and treated well. This is what make NOFCC such a great charity.”

Not all costs are covered under Canada's health-care system. Groups like the NOFCC help families that have to pay for chemo that may not be covered, as well as other costs.

“We know that this money will be well used and we urge those in our community to help the NOFCC if you can,” he wrote.

Groups that sponsored the event include Desjardins' Metro Val Est, Brokerlink Insurance, Cambrian Ford, Cambrian Insurance, Sudbury, Greater Sudbury Airport, Greater Sudbury Utilities, CUPE National, CUPE Ontario, CUPE Council, Jubes Bar and Grill, REMAX Marcel Gladu, North Shore Wheel, Crosstown, Sudbury Credit Union (Copper Cliff), and Tutor Doctor.

Local businesses such as Sudbury Credit Union  (Copper Cliff), OMERS, Canadian Tire Chelmsford, Belanger Ford, Metro Chelmsford, Food Basics Regent, Food Basics Lasalle, Food Basics Notre Dame, Fairstone, Science North, Espanola Coffee Roasters, Chartrands Independent Grocers, Silver City Sudbury, Neil's Independent, Lessard Welding, Woodwyant, Brokerlink, Gary Aubut, and CUPE National all helped out by providing gifts for the prize table.

The CUPE Local 4705 social committee consists of Bellerose, Joey Ladouceur, Denise Bélanger, Jacky Comeau and Phil Kingsbury. Volunteers for the event were Gary, Nico, Brian, Max, Seth and Tanner.
