Ward 8 Coun. Al Sizer has been elected as chair of the Greater Sudbury Police Services board.

Ward 8 Coun. Al Sizer has taken the reins of Greater Sudbury Police Services board as chair.

Sizer accepted the position on Jan. 19 during the virtual police services board meeting. He was one of two board members nominated for the chair’s position.

Former chair Lise Poratto-Mason said her schedule going forward won’t allow her to take on the responsibilities of chair, as she has been doing for the past year and a half.

Poratto-Mason said she has enjoyed her time as chair of the board for the last year, and as acting chair for six month prior to her election.

“I feel that it's time, and in terms of my ability to commit to this board, I just stepped down as chair,” said Poratto-Mason.

Poratto-Mason was named to the board in February 2020

Board member Richard Bois declined a nomination for the chair’s position after Ward 2 Coun. Michael Vagnini offered up his name as a candidate.

“My appointment to the board expires in June,” said Bois. “I don’t know what the status of that is, going forward. So, for the purpose of continuity, I would decline at this time.”

Retaining her seat as co-chair is Frances Caldarelli.

It was Poratto-Mason who recommended Caldarelli’s reappointment.

“She has been such a great influence on this board,” said Poratto-Mason.

Caldarelli nominated Bois for the position, but he declined.
