The downtown vs. The Kingsway arena debate appears to have reached a whole new level, with someone putting up a banner in the downtown Sunday evening that demanded “Impeach Kirwan.”

The sign, reportedly put up near the intersection of Elgin and Durham streets, seems to refer to Ward 5 Coun. Robert Kirwan, an active proponent of the Kingsway Entertainment District project.

It had been taken down by early Monday morning.

A man named Cory Holmes posted a picture of the sign on Kirwan's Facebook community message board Valley East Sunday night, saying “Some people won't give up. Thank you Kirwan for all you've done.”

Another man, Ricky Lampsa, said “Downtown vs Kingsway, highly entertaining, like babies fighting over a toy.”

Kirwan decided to look on the lighter side of the situation, saying it was too bad the sign wasn't posted in his Valley East-area ward.

“I love it! Usually people spell my last name wrong,” he said in a Facebook post.

“This person has so much respect for me that the spelling was correct. I just hope I don't get in trouble because we are not supposed to be putting up election signs until after July 27.

“Some people are now going to accuse me of violating the election sign by-law.”
