City's green spaces topic of open houses

The results of a two-year assessment of existing and potential green spaces will be the topic of several open houses being held by the city's green space advisory panel in April.

The results of a two-year assessment of existing and potential green spaces will be the topic of several open houses being held by the city's green space advisory panel in April.

"Public feedback is an integral step in this process," Bill Lautenbach, general manager of growth and development for the city, said in a press release. "The city's green spaces include areas like parkland, green belts, and conservation areas."

The green space advisory panel was created by city council in 2007 to develop a classification and ranking system for green areas that would help the city when acquiring or selling property.

The draft of the Parkland Disposal Policy was also developed, and if adopted would affect city decisions related to the selling of surplus parkland.

"Whether these spaces are used for recreation, to benefit the economy, or for simple beautification, we need citizen output if we are to develop policies that are in everyone's best interest," Lautenbach said.
