Collège Boréal in Sudbury will soon be the home of a new wellness centre that will be used to conduct research into physical activity for senior citizens.

The $4 million for that project was part of more than $5 million in funding that was announced today in Nickel City for the French-language college’s campuses here and in Windsor.

Nickel Belt MP Marc Serré and and Sudbury MP Paul Lefebvre made the announcement today at the French-language college. The announcement on behalf of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains.

The funding was approved as part of the Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada Post-Secondary Strategic Investment Fund (SIF).

Sudbury MPP Glenn Thibeault was also on hand to $700,000 in provincial funding to assist Boréal with the completion of the two projects through the Ministry’s Facility Renewals Program (FRP).

The soon-to-be-built, $4 million wellness centre in Greater Sudbury will allow the college to conduct research in the area of physical activity for senior citizens, particularly in the area of how being active impacts mobility, independence and mental health of elderly Canadians.

The remaining $1 million in federal funds will be used by Boréal to transform an underused recreational facility at its Windsor campus into a learning facility with increased classrooms and labs, increasing the campus’ capacity to meet the needs of Francophones in the community.

Sudbury.com will have more on this story shortly.
