Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury and Laurentian University School of the Environment will be hosting a community discussion and information session about the possibility of Coniston being home to a ferrochrome production facility.

The discussion will be held on Saturday, April 28 from 3 - 6 p.m. at École Notre Dame de la Merci in Coniston (2 Edward Ave. N)

What are the potential health and environmental impacts, especially when it comes to hexavalent chromium, a known carcinogen?  What protections are in place?  Come find some of the answers and ask your own questions at a community information session.

The agenda for the day is as follows:

  1. Panel discussion: Hear from the community, and from expert panelists who will share information about emissions and waste products, environmental and health impacts, and the environmental review and regulatory process.
  2. Town Hall Q&A: Ask your questions
  3. Open House: Speak one on one with panelists, view and pick up further information, connect with others.

Expert panelists include will include Dr. Stefan Siemann (Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Laurentian University); Dr. Charles Ramcharan (School of the Environment, Laurentian University); Liza Vandermeer (retired MOECC staff member); Brennain Lloyd (Northwatch).   Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (Sudbury/Sault Ste Marie District) and Public Health Sudbury and Districts declined participation on the panel at this time.

Snacks and a children’s craft table will be at the event. Transportation from downtown will be available for those that need it. Two Lockerby taxi vans will be in front of the downtown arena at 2:20 p.m. and will leave at 2:40 p.m., with signs for “Ferrochrome Meeting Coniston”.

“Ever since it was announced that Greater Sudbury had identified Coniston as the preferred location in their bid for the ferrochrome smelter, citizens have been hungry for more information to better understand what that might mean for their community and families before NorOnt decides where to locate,” said Naomi Grant, co-chair of Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury.

It is expected that Noront Resources will select the city in which to locate its production facility by summer 2018.
