Greater Sudbury classrooms are set for a hardware upgrade following a donation of about 800 computers from TD Canada Trust.

The donations are made through a government program called Computers for Schools Ontario (CFSO). TD donated close to 1,400 systems, 5,000 additional monitors and 79 servers to CFSO, which allocates the equipment across the province.

Marc Gascon, manager at the Sudbury Refurbishing Centre, said the systems from TD haven't gone out yet but there isn't a big demand out there.

"Right now our waiting list is quite short so we're able to supply them usually within a month," Gascon said. "We're able to supply all needs right now."

More than 5,000 systems have been donated in Northern Ontario since April 2005.

Usually First Nation communities come first because we're trying to bring up the literacy rate in Northern Ontario, Gascon said. Many donations are made specifically for use in First Nations communities and have special software added to encourage literacy.

With the surplus in computers created by the TD donation, Gascon said he'll be able to replace CFSO computers donated years ago with newer, faster models.
