Beginning next month, an inquest will be held into the death of Walter George Blight, who was killed in a motor vehicle collision on Highway 69 near Killarney almost three years ago.

Blight, 72, of Elliot Lake, died on July 16, 2015, as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle collision in Killarney. Blight was headed southbound in a Chevrolet van, when his vehicle crossed the centre line and collided with a northbound tractor trailer.

The crash occurred in a construction zone just before 2 a.m., three kilometres south of Highway 637.

Blight was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash closed the highway for nine hours.

"The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Blight's death, with focus on issues related to driving safety in the presence of medical and psychiatric illness," said a news release from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

"The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths."

The inquest is expected to last five days and to hear from approximately 11 witnesses.

The proceedings will begin at 9:30 a.m. on April 9 at the Radisson Hotel in Sudbury. Dr. David Cameron will preside as inquest coroner and Prabhu Rajan will be counsel to the coroner.
