Largely decided in the second period, the Greater Sudbury Cubs Junior "A" ice hockey team hit the net three times in the second period in their 5-3 defeat of the Powassan Voodoos.

The away game at the Powassan Sportsplex found the Cubs open the scoring early, with Hudson Chitaroni's shot beat Voodoos starter Daniel Dirracolo low only 51 seconds in.

The Cubs increased the lead on a neutral zone turnover as Ethan Larmand went in alone on Dirracolo and decked him over his left leg, which made it 2-0 at 7:42.

Battalion prospect Reyth Smith continued his hot streak, netting his 21st goal at 13:43 to make it 2-1.

The Voodoos got the equalizer early in the second as Mike MacLean took a shot coming down the left wing that beat Noah Beaulne to make it 2-2 at the 58 second mark of the second.

Hudson Martin took a shot through traffic just over a minute later to give the Cubs a 3-2 lead.

The Cubs increased their lead while attempting to kill off a four-minute Voodoos power play as Oliver Smith netted a shorthanded tally on a partial breakaway, which made it 4-2 at 8:47 of the second.

Less than three minutes after that Barrie Colts prospect Nolan Newton netted his 23rd on a Cubs power play which made it 5-2 Cubs after two.

The Voodoos scored a late goal with the net empty as Zach Turner scored his 10th of the season to round out the score.

The win improves the Cubs record to 33-8-1-1 while the Voodoos four-game winning streak ends as they drop to 24-15-0-2.

The Cubs’ next game will also be against the Voodoos, and will take place on Feb. 1 beginning at 7:05 p.m. at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.
