Time really does fly when you're having fun, at least that's the way that John and Claudette Douguay see it.

The couple have been married for 35 years and celebrated the milestone on June 25 with a grand celebration that NorthernLife.ca was lucky enough to get an invite to.

In a packed hall at Extendicare York, surrounded by staff, friends and family, the Douguays renewed their wedding vows while being serenaded by the King himself, Elvis Presley (well the next best thing: tribute artist Brad Rose).

The two held hands throughout the entire ceremony, before John, 72, slipped a ring out of his pocket and on to Claudette's, 74, finger and laying a loving kiss on her.

“This wasn't something that I had really been planning,” said John. “The date kind of just came up and I wanted to show her how much I love her.”

The two met in Sudbury and married in 1980 and have been together ever since. Claudette said having Elvis there on their 35th anniversary was a nice touch.

“We both really like his music and he's come here a few times so it was nice that he made time for this,” she said.

What's their secret to such impressive longevity and commitment? Claudette says that there has always been a great deal of respect between them.

“We love each other, I don't think we've ever really argued, we do everything together,” she said. “We always travelled together, danced together, went camping, I always respected what he said and made sure I listened to him.”

The memory that sticks out most to the two most recently however was John winning a battle with cancer.

“He was really sick for a while, but he's better now and we're so happy.”

Congratulations John and Claudette, here's to many more happy years together.
