Retired Lt.-Gen. Roméo Dallaire visited Sudbury on May 25 to present a keynote address inside of the Science North Vale Cavern.

An outspoken advocate and champion for human rights, Dallaire's hour-long speech focused on refugee issues and the role that Canada has to play on the global scale.

The evening was presented by Huntington University and was an opportunity to shine a light on the work done by Lifeline Sudbury, a non-denominational umbrella group that works with various refugee sponsoring groups across Greater Sudbury to facilitate the sponsorship and resettlement process.

Proceeds from the evening will be used to support local refugee initiatives.

Dallaire spoke about his time spent in Rwanda in 1994, when 800,000 people were murdered in 100 days as part of a horrific civil war. He also touched on  the current refugee crisis in the Middle East, where people again are trying to flee another brutal civil war.

Sudbury.com reporter Darren MacDonald interviewed Dallaire ahead of his visit to Sudbury, and that story can be found here.
