Dowling woman 'knighted' for volunteer work

Dowling resident Carmen Portelance has been named to the Knights of the order of the pléiade for 2016.

“Knight Carmen Portelance is a remarkable woman who has devoted herself to la Francophonie since she was very young,” said Nickel Belt MPP France Gélinas, president of the Ontario Section of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Francophonie (APF).

Other recipients are: Alain Beaucoin of Newmarket, Lorraine Hamilton of Burlington, Pierre Foucher of Ottawa,Louis Patry of Orléans and Diane Dubois of St. Thomas.  

These individuals were selected by a committee of parliamentarians of the APF of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario for their outstanding contribution to Ontario's Francophone community.  

The inauguration ceremony took place April 18 in the Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell’s suite at Queen’s Park in Toronto.  

“I hope the community will join me in congratulating the new Knights,” said Gélinas.  

La Pléiade, Order of the Francophonie and the dialogue of cultures is an initiative of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Francophonie (APF), which was established in 1976. 

It is intended to recognize the merits of the personalities who have contributed to the development of the French language in Ontario.
