When we think of the musical instruments found in elementary schools, we often remember the triangle and the recorder.

The latter is the classical musical instrument used for several years in several schools. We all have memories of playing "Frère Jacques" on the flute in a music class.

In order to give her students a unique experience, Marie-Josée Alarie, a teacher at the École St-Étienne (Dowling), taught them how to make music with boomwhackers.

This wacky percussion instrument is a brightly coloured hollow plastic tube. The musical notes produced vary depending on the length of the plastic tube.

The instruments are being used right now because of restrictions on wind instruments in schools due to the pandemic.

By following the musical notes displayed on the interactive whiteboard and sounding the boomwhackers on their hands or thighs, kindergarten to grade 6 students had much fun while playing different melodies, said a press release.

Thanks to her great creativity, Alarie was able to offer the students a fun and safe musical activity.
