PSB extends police chief's contract until 2022:

Meeting on Wednesday, Greater Sudbury's police services board voted unanimously to extend Police Chief Paul Pedersen's contract for another three years until 2022. Hired in spring 2014 following the departure of former chief Frank Elsner, Pedersen brought 34 years of experience to the job. Find the full story on Pedersen's contract extension here.

Police searching for man who allegedly assaulted woman:

Greater Sudbury Police are trying to track down a man who they allege savagely beat a woman on Jan. 8, threatening her and causing her to fear for her own life and that of her child. Sudbury Rainbow Crime Stoppers is offering up to $2,000 for information that leads to the man's arrest. Find out more here.

ICYMI: Lively dogs' owners could face hefty fine, possible jail sentence:

The penalties for a dog owner who contravenes the Dog Owner's Liability Act can include jail time, said the Ministry of the Attorney General. Failing to exercise reasonable precautions to prevent a dog from biting or attacking a person or domestic animal is a violation of the Provincial Offences Act, and can come with a six-month jail sentence. Throwback Thursday returns with another trip back in time:

Last week, city council voted in favour of submitting a bid to host the 2021 Canada Summer Games here in Greater Sudbury. Huntington hosts symposium on elder abuse: 

Huntington University’s Gerontology Society (HUGS), in collaboration with the Gerontology Department at Huntington University and the Canadian Association on Gerontology Student Connection will host a symposium – Elder Abuse and Neglect – on Jan. 19  The event will feature guest speakers from The Greater Sudbury Police Service, Elder Abuse Ontario - North East Region, and North Bay Regional Health Centre. ICYMI: Trial date to be set next month for Sudbury byelection charges:

Sudbury businessman Gerry Lougheed Jr. and former provincial Liberal campaign director Patricia Sorbara should know next month when their trial on bribery charges will begin. In Sudbury court Wednesday, the parties agreed to return to court Feb. 8 to set a trial date. About four weeks have been set aside in early summer for the court proceedings.
